Garfield Elementary School

The school where I work is a low income, 97.2% Free & Reduced lunch (From OSPI Website), and migrant school.  We can’t expect our students to have resources at home.  The majority of my parents look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them my expectations.  If we have high expectations for our kids and truly teach with differentiated instruction, we will reach 90-100% of our kids.  They will be reading with 20-30 words a minute of 1st grade reading (Theme 2-5 depending on their levels).

Currently, with our recent test scores, the kids as of January 11, 2008 were reading an average of 40 syllables per minute and 20 words per minute between both classrooms of Spanish readers.

Because our parents don’t have many resources at home, we need to make the materials for them.  I usually give the flash cards below at the parent open house in the Fall.  This year, when I did home visits, I was able to give the flash cards along with other materials to each parent and explain how they can use them with their child.  Because I had more time to visit with the parent one-on-one, I believe I had more parent buy in.

1.  Flash Cards with Numbers (sets on the back)
2.  Flash Cards with Capital Letters only
3.  Flash Cards with Lower Case Letters only
4.  Flash Cards with Picture/Sound correspondence
5.  Laminate with Picture/Sound correspondence to reinforce tracking left to write and the poem we teach with the laminate.

During Fall Parent Conferences (Mid October), I show parents their letter/sound assessment and tell them my expectations; then give them their Syllable Flash Cards.  I also show them the flash cards they will get when they come to Spring conference (1st grade words).
